Originally by: Worzissovo I am curious. I'v seen alot of post from pirates talking about how dishonorable, unreliable, or just plain unrespectable anti pirates are? So what makes an anti pirate respectable. I only ask b/c its a proffession I may pursue. Afterall I have mastered the cloning part hehe.
I think a big reason that antipirates are frowned upon is because they are seen by pirates as pirates who think they are better than pirates because they hunt pirates.
I share this view. To me, antipirates are no different from pirates. Lets look at why:
First, why do pirates pirate? 1. Some do it for the rush of the fight 2. Some do it for the money 3. Some do it for role play 4. Some do it to ruin someone's day
Now, why do antipirates antpirate? 1. Some do it for the rush of the fight, and claim that it is acceptable because they are somehow morally superior to pirates 2. None of them mind using the loot that they get for financial gain 3. Some do it for the role play 4. Some do it to ruin a pirate's day, and claim that it is acceptable because they are somehow morally superior to pirates
So really, pirates and antipirates are really no different - except that antipirates seem to consider themselves "morally superior" to pirates, and they use this as justification for their killing. This attitude is a real turn-off!
Personally, I don't see piracy as a "moral" issue. This is a game. "Killing" other people is part of this game, just as taking your opponent's queen is a prudent thing to do in a game of Chess. There are many ways to play the game - and "killing" other "people" is just as valid as mining, ratting, mission whoring, and manufacturing.
I hold this view even though in real life I believe that murder, rape, assault, theft, etc. are wrong! I would never commit any of these acts, and if I saw these acts being committed I would do what I could to stop them. That is because real life, real dignity, and real property are at stake here. In a game, the "property" is not real - it is simply assigned to you through a system of rules determined by the game designer.
Oh yes, I must head off an easy - and naive - counter argument to this: one might suppose that by my above statements, hacking another player's account and thus "stealing" their account is morally acceptable. It is not - because that is denying someone the service that they paid for, or abusing some system to circumvent the rules put forth in the game.
